ABSTRACT

This chapter assesses the role of international democratic cooperation from a cosmopolitan perspective. It argues that international cooperation has a crucial role to play in executing global justice reforms. The chapter considers the role that international democratic cooperation plays in current cosmopolitan thinking. It addresses the realist concern that international democratic cooperation in the service of ethical demands, and the League of Democracies as an expression of such cooperation, are infeasible and unrealistic pipe dreams. The chapter shows that, while cosmopolitans do not pay much attention to the issue, they do at times imply that international cooperation between democracies is a step in the implementation of cosmopolitan policy proposals. It explores the idea of the League of Democracies, arguing that an intergovernmental organization (IGO) for the democracies of the world could help to promote successful cooperation between democracies, by facilitating joint agreements and by increasing their commitments.
