ABSTRACT

The second phase of Chinese research on Judaism lasted from 1949 to 1990. For historical reasons, from late 1949 to early 1980, research on Judaism in China was virtually at a stand-still, and only a few translated works with incidental references to Judaism were published. The 1990s were the time when Chinese research on Judaism really took off. One of the reasons for this was the increasing openness of China to the world, so that all kinds of exchanges between countries became more frequent and Chinese people became increasingly eager to know more about the different civilisations of the world, including Jewish civilisation. The Jewish Culture Series, edited by Professor Gu Xiaoming of Fudan University in Shanghai, has been published at intervals since 1991 by Shanghai Joint Publishing. The Centre for Jewish Studies at Nanjing University was established in 1992. The Centre concentrates on research and teaching, and also organises various activities relating to Jewish culture.
