ABSTRACT

Driver information systems (DIS) in automobiles are getting more and more complex. Available systems include audio, navigation, phone, and TV. E-mail, internet and office applications will be added. DIS turn into CarPCs. New interfaces have to be developed to make these system usable and safe. CAA did a usability study with four DIS. Results showed that single solutions matched users’ needs, but neither system was completely accepted. The interaction with the DIS was too complex and difficult. The results of the study were applied to the development of CAA’s CarPC. The number of input devices and screen elements were reduced, a voice-control system was added.
