ABSTRACT

Two types of learning were compared when training operators to operate a simulated system: learning by being told plus practicing provided rules, versus learning by being told plus exploratory search. On a general level of analysis both groups do not differ with regard to control performance. More finegrained analyses reveal important differences: learning by being told plus practicing rules goes together with a temporary drop of control performance when control demands change and become more difficult. Shifting to a modified control strategy is connected with a decrease of performance and requires time.
