ABSTRACT

The last few years have seen considerable developments in requirements acquisition and theory-based user modelling (as an approach to usability evaluation). This paper describes an initial framework for integrating these areas. Requirements analysis is needed both to inform system design and to identify potentially problematic areas where user modelling is needed. Conversely, the identification of problems through user modelling raises questions that can only be answered through further requirements acquisition. Appropriate techniques must be selected, particularly in cases where users’ knowledge of their tasks may be semi-tacit. The framework is illustrated by reference to a case study taken from the domain of air traffic control.
