ABSTRACT

Within the context of normal flight, situation assessment must occur continuously to ensure situation awareness. In addition, according to naturalistic decision making models, when a decision event arises, situation assessment must serve the decision process. Situation assessment has been defined and described as it contributes to each of these two domains. This paper presents the two conceptualizations of situation assessment and highlights similarities and differences between them in order to achieve increased understanding of the concept. A proposal is made to consider these two domains in relationship to one another when situation assessment is being addressed, particularly for training. Specifically, the concept of nesting is proposed to help in integrating situation assessment requirements from the two domains and in applying this knowledge to training system design. Examples of suggestions for training design are provided.
