ABSTRACT

The derivation, form and use of a cognitive task model of the Anti-Air Warfare Commander of the Royal Navy is described in a project designed to establish principles of decision aiding. These are aimed at assisting in the more efficient procurement of decision aiding systems. Theoretical links are established with concepts from the naturalistic decision making school and with classical architectural mental concepts. The use of the model in producing a design method and some laboratory prototypes arising from it are described.
