ABSTRACT

This report considers the findings of two experiments examining the use of image-fused explanatory displays for tactical pilot decision making. In considering how much information about a launch success zone (LSZ) needs to be presented to pilots, alternative LSZ formats were tested alongside the full LSZ format, developed at DERA Farnborough. The first experiment examined single axis and double axis LSZ formats, and for the second experiment a circular format was used. Objective measurements of response times, error and memory scores and subjective situational awareness rating technique (SART) scores were recorded. The results of both experiments support the previous findings of the strategic research programme and suggest that alternative LSZ Formats may well offer a useful tool in future dynamic displays.
