ABSTRACT

This paper outlines methods being used to evaluate the interface of a prototype simulator device that exploits virtual controls and touch-screen technology to provide a reconfigurable cockpit procedures training environment. Two main approaches have been chosen: assessment by human factors/HCI experts of the various features of the display using a checklist developed from the ergonomics literature, and an evaluation of the usability of the interface and acceptability of the device through user trials. At this stage in the programme, a pilot trial has been completed and analysed, and the method used for this will be adopted for further trials. This paper outlines the main findings to date and highlights some of the methodological difficulties encountered when performing an evaluation on this type of device.
