ABSTRACT

This chapter deals riot with music videos, but with another manifestation of urban music, live video mixes to Disc Jockey sets, particularly those performed at Berlin's Wurttembergische Metallwaren-Fabrik (WMF) club. However, as soon as the rights had been settled, WMF has been on the move–using no less than 4 other venues within Berlin-Mitte, but has managed to keep up its profile as a major tekkno and underground location. The chapter addresses how it has been hosting various media platforms such as Visomat and creating new styles and ways of appropriating music and visuals. Anatomies of hardware vibrate directly from the source codes, before creating the refined surface effects they are usually used for, and to couple the image of a wiring diagram with drum'n'bass and jazz sounds. Blurring and manipulating do not aim at the aesthetic effects usually intended by distorted or poorly processed visuals.
