ABSTRACT

The Psychology Department of the Portuguese Road Prevention (PRP – Prevenção Rodoviária Portuguesa) developed a set of course for the rehabilitation of traffic offenders for offences such as drink driving, speeding and substance abuse. The law classifies the transgressions as light, serious and very serious. The serious and very serious transgressions are sanctioned with a fine and drivers have their licence removed for a certain period. In relation to speed, a serious transgression is committed when exceeding thirty km/h above the allowed limit outside built-up areas or when exceeding twenty km/h inside built-up areas. It is a very serious transgression when the driver exceeds the limit above sixty km/h outside urban areas and above forty km/h inside urban areas. According to the Road Code, licences are suspended and offenders have to attend a relevant course, which is currently run by the Psychology Department of the PRP.
