ABSTRACT

The occupation of law enforcement has been identified as one of the most stressful in existence across the world (Anshel, 2000; Beehr, Johnson and Nieva, 1995; Brown and Campbell, 1994; Dantzer, 1987; Loo, 1984). Johnson and Hall (1988) reported that a combination of high workload, intense time pressure and low social support are associated with high stress levels. Within the police service there is a culture that dictates that any expression of psychosocial stress of job-related problems is a sign of personal weakness (Biggam et al, 1997). Not surprisingly, most empirical studies support a positive relationship between job stress and accidents at work (Kirschenbaum, Oigenblick and Goldberg, 2000).
