ABSTRACT

This Catalogue is a revised, much enlarged and annotated version of one which was compiled for the exhibitions in Corpus Christi College, Cambridge, Gonville and Caius College and Cambridge University Library, and designed primarily for delegates to the BAA Conference on medieval Bury St Edmunds held in April 1994. It is of manuscripts in Cambridge from, or closely associated with, St Edmund’s Abbey. The surviving manuscripts from Bury represent only a fragment of its once splendid library which in the late Middle Ages is estimated to have contained between two and three thousand volumes. Rough outlines of the history of the monk’s book collection can be obtained from medieval book-lists and from the extant books themselves. The book-list and extant volumes show that in the first half of the 12th century the monks increased their holding of patristic texts.
