ABSTRACT

This chapter looks at the topic of Euro-scepticism as it is being discussed in Britain today. It discusses keywords emphasising Britain as a nation state and her role within the wider world. The keywords include federal-, superstate, bureaucra-, unelected; faceless, accountable; unaccountable, monster, Frankfurt, dictat-, submerge-; subsume-, altar; sacrifice-; worship-, corrupt-, proportional, continental, fortress, province, Anglo-Saxon, value-, prosperity, independen-, sovereign-, Commonwealth, transatlantic, NATO, and global. The British Euro-sceptic discourse draws a picture of an idyllic Britain, shut off from and unperturbed by continental bleakness, yet open to the global community at large, a place where tradition and modernity are reconciled by British values. The reality construed in the British Euro-sceptic discourse is far from implausible; rather it appears backed by factual evidence. But even though neither politicians nor industry share the sentiments of the Euro-sceptic agenda fully, they may still find it advantageous if the discourse audience puts the blame for negative developments in Britain on Europe.
