ABSTRACT
This chapter discusses the specific translation difficulties and the ways in which the translator addresses these problems. In November 1996, the German weekly newspaper Die Zeit published an article 'Der Ton wird scharfer', written by Fredy Gsteiger. Its English translation was published in The Guardian of 4 December 1996 under the title 'Nerves fray in the Elysee'. The translator of Gsteiger's article tried to produce a communicative translation. The translator does not always use the opportunities given by the German original to make the translation vivid and to highlight contrasts. Throughout the translation the translator fails to give an accurate translation of the main metaphor, that of Germany as a headmaster, which lies at the basis of the whole article and returns in various forms. Instead, he systematically portrays Germany as an aggressor with a drive for superiority.
