ABSTRACT

Authentic assessment is rooted in efforts that many communication-minded individuals strive for in their pedagogical approach and so it is a natural fit as an evaluative process. Authentic assessment can be either formative or summative in nature. Authentic assessment is often considered a time-consuming process or a process that creates difficulty in gaining reliable assessment results. Authentic learning is the authentic root of embedded assessment and means "higher-order learning that is used in solving problems that are present in their context". Authentic tasks focus on students' abilities to draw on knowledge learned in prerequisite courses or core classes. Authentic and embedded assessments nest within a larger explanatory assessment notion called performance assessment. Authenticity and assessment are both about a desire to know if students are really learning the knowledge and skills that they need to learn, to be prepared for the next step in their education and career.
