ABSTRACT
Daniel A. Bell has degrees from McGill University and Oxford University. He is now a professor of philosophy at Tsinghua University in Beijing. He is the author of East Meets West (2000) and Communitarianism and Its Critics (1993). He also published Beyond Liberal Democracy: Political Thinking for an East Asian Context (2006), from which this selection is drawn.
