ABSTRACT

William R. LaFleur is a professor of Japanese studies at the University of Pennsylvania. He translated Awesome Nightfall: The Life, Times, and Poetry of Saigyo (2003) and is the author of Liquid Life: Abortion and Buddhism in Japan (1992) and The Karma of Words: Buddhism and Literary Arts in Medieval Japan (1983). He is the editor of Zen and Western Thought: Essays on Masao Abe (1985) and Dogen Studies (1985).
