ABSTRACT

Chemical-dependency recovery treatment programs exist that specifically treat clients with traumatic brain injury, the majority of traumatic brain injury (TBI) clients with chemical-dependency (CD) issues are mainstreamed into traditional chemical dependency programs with other clients from their community. Certainly, some strong arguments can be made for not removing TBI clients from their community, such as the proximity of their medical team or family and the cost of inpatient treatment. Mainstream or traditional CD treatment programs may typically base their therapeutic approach on one of several orientations. Some of these traditional therapy models include insight-oriented treatment, skill-building treatment approaches, and traditional behavior treatments. Disability strategies are a type of motivational therapy that relies on motivational-interviewing techniques to support the client. Clients may have had neuropsychological testing performed in the past; however, if not, such testing should be conducted to determine potential strengths and deficits. As treatment progressed, the client became less argumentative and more engaged in the treatment program.
