ABSTRACT

This introduction presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book offers professionals who work with children within an educational context a wealth of ideas for generating non-fiction writing. It focuses on the concerning findings in OfSTED reports, assertions made in educational-based publications and headlines found in mainstream newspapers about the continuing ‘English crisis’ in primary classrooms, despite the rise in pupils meeting the expected standards in reading and writing. The book provides a variety of ways to support and enhance their professional development and their provision and practice in the classroom/school. It aims to support professionals in gaining confidence in their teaching of writing of a range of non-fiction genres that child authors will find inspiring and engaging. Many may argue that this is not actually a non-fiction genre, favouring it more as being fictional in nature.
