ABSTRACT

The main purpose of instructions is to tell the reader how to make or do something. An instructional text usually speaks directly to the reader. However, an instructional text may be written in the third person if more than one person is to be involved, example person A or the group leader. Prior to child authors embarking on writing a set of instructions, it is beneficial for them to explore a range of procedural texts. These could include recipes, technical manuals, example electronic devices, games, rules, crafts, and directions. For child authors to be inspired to write instructional texts, they need to have access to inspirational and engaging instructional texts that they can read and use as a model for their own writing. Arguably one of the most important elements required to produce a set of ‘quality’ instructions is that they should be written in chronological order.
