ABSTRACT

This chapter aims to increase dialogue around patient access to healthcare information that validates the intersectional experiences of migrant Latinas within reproductive healthcare. It examines the call for reproductive healthcare providers to acknowledge the intersectional experiences that shape the unique healthcare needs of migrant Latinas and provide better outreach and treatment. Migrant Latinas that face higher rates of sexual assault, domestic abuse, and trauma require reproductive healthcare that validates their increased risk for experiencing depression during and after pregnancy. For survivors of domestic violence, which is the leading threat of injury to women in the United States, accessing reproductive and mental healthcare services can be burdensome and complicated due to barriers of class, ethnicity, and immigration status. Challenges in accessing public health services for migrant Latinas are also impacted by the political climate influencing policy and social programs for migrant communities.
