ABSTRACT

This introduction presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book talks about every National Curriculum subject. It demonstrates the importance of religious education for all pupils and offers suggestions about the range of activities that are possible. The book tackles questions concerning access and entitlement to the whole curriculum for pupils with profound and multiple learning difficulties (PMLD). It explores the problems experienced by families who have a child with learning difficulties. It explores the roles and responsibilities of the various agencies, the rights and the responsibilities of parents, and the need for the involvement of the children themselves. The book discusses the nation's requirements, how training was provided in the past and how it might be provided in the future. It focuses on the personal and social development of maturing child and young adult, and reflects on important theme of developing pupils' skills of self-advocacy and its implications for schools.
