ABSTRACT

This chapter suggests that the European dimension – although cross-curricular and having its place in other subjects – may be subsumed into the modern foreign languages curriculum. Within the legal requirements of the National Curriculum for England within modern foreign languages, there is a clear statement on inclusion to 'meet the specific needs of individuals and groups of pupils'. There has been much scepticism about introducing a modern foreign language to pupils with severe learning difficulties. The use of information and communication technology (ICT) has been a major factor in making the modern foreign languages curriculum accessible at George Hastwell School. The teaching of modern languages lends itself to a multisensory approach, which suits the type of students we are discussing. In a school for moderate learning difficulties, the modern-foreign-language teacher set up a system by which she would give points every time she heard a pupil speak French.
