ABSTRACT

This chapter begins by setting the context for the educational uses of information and communication technology (ICT) for pupils with special educational needs. It discusses the requirements and recommendations of developing ICT capability in the National Curriculum as far as it affect pupils with learning difficulties and disabilities. The chapter looks at the role of ICT in providing access to learning. It discusses some of the issues facing schools on identifying solutions and effective implementation. The rate of development in the application of ICT over the last decade of the twentieth century has had a fundamental impact on our life-styles. The inclusion of the performance descriptions, for pupils with more severe disabilities, demonstrates the empowering role of ICT. Securing access to ICT presents schools with a number of questions of management, including prioritising the availability of resources between different children and different classes.
