ABSTRACT

The inclusion of PSHE and citizenship in the revised National Curriculum been influenced and developed by many groups and committees. Personal and social skills are cross-curricular and in common with other cross-curricular skills, for example, communication skills they exist as part of a complex and sophisticated picture. Personal and social development relates to all aspects of school life and should permeate all elements of the work of schools. The framework for PSHE and citizenship in the National Curriculum is designed to build on the early-learning goals in the Foundation Stage for personal, social and emotional development. PSHE and citizenship can be planned for a variety of groupings: individual activity, group activity and whole-school activities. QCA guidance suggests that a variety of forms of provision should be considered and a combination used. A very uncomplicated perspective of PSHE and citizenship may be a useful standpoint when considering strategies for delivery.
