ABSTRACT

This chapter explores ways of achieving and enabling access to the mathematics curriculum. Concepts, knowledge and skills are elements within the mathematics curriculum. The revised National Curriculum for mathematics provides teachers with greater flexibility to respond to the need of pupils with special educational needs (SEN) by allowing material to be selected from earlier or later key stages to enable pupils to make progress and achieve. The framework for teaching mathematics in the National Numeracy Strategy seeks to introduce a welcome rigour into the process of teaching children to recall and use rules, techniques and procedures and to develop ways of thinking about the concepts and ideas encountered in lessons and texts. The National Numeracy Strategy gives much emphasis to the appropriate use of mathematical language, and Her Majesty's Chief Inspector of Schools (HMCI) says that pupils in primary schools generally use mathematical vocabulary correctly and show increasing confidence in explaining how they perform calculations.
