ABSTRACT

The reaction among the various bodies in the physical education world, such as the Physical Education Association (PEA), is one of satisfaction –with particular pleasure at the increased flexibility, minimisation of change, and reduction in content. The importance of physical education goes beyond the level descriptions of the attainment target by also developing physical competence and confidence, skilfulness, and knowledge of the body in action. PE provides opportunities for competition, challenge and creativity while at the same time promoting positive attitudes to active and healthy lifestyles. The National Curriculum handbook provides guidance on how PE can make contributions across the curriculum. The attainment target for PE sets out the knowledge, skills and understanding that pupils of different abilities are expected to show by the end of each key stage. An important part of the Qualifications and Curriculum Authority (QCA) document deals with performance descriptions of attainments of pupils working towards Level 1 of the National Curriculum.
