ABSTRACT

This chapter argues that fashion became important as part of the process of civilizing the Soviet people, which started right after the Revolution of 1917 as an anthropological project of creating of the New Soviet man. It begins with the concept of Soviet fashion and its peculiarities. The chapter examines in detail the dominating concept of Soviet style, which was under both Soviet state control and Western influence. “The development of taste is one of the most important forms of struggle for the raising of Soviet socialist culture, for cultural growth of all Soviet people”. This lack of emphasis on gender means that the taste and art of dressing are considered as a construction of Soviet man rather than a building of gender identity. Art critics, artists, and designers from houses of fashion were considered experts and invited to provide comments on the topics.
