ABSTRACT

This chapter describes the process to design field-based teacher education through backward design, specifically Understanding by Design (UbD). It discusses the process used to design the Teaching, Learning, and Leading With Schools and Communities program. THE chapter provides foundational information on the program’s curriculum, assessment. UbD is a rigorous curricular design framework that begins with the end in mind by defining the ultimate goals for learning and development and planning appropriate assessment and effective instruction to support learners in achieving those goals. UbD offers a valuable framework for teacher educators to reconsider and redesign their work to prepare effective educators for P–12 schools. After defining the goals and assessments of the teacher education program, teacher educators partnered with school and community partners to design a field-based learning plan to support candidates in becoming effective educators. In the spirit of backward design, enduring understandings, knowledge, skills, and dispositions were woven throughout the program.
