ABSTRACT

In this chapter, the author introduces a number of new resources and factors that could contribute to his ability to open new doors for minority students seeking higher education opportunities. He shows that he had a passion for improving the opportunities available to minority students through higher education and advocating for students that shared his identity. Leadership experiences help students learn important habits for achieving academic goals, methods of positively impacting their school climate, and team-building opportunities through collaboration with others. For many minority students entering college, campus involvement opportunities may align with their inspiration for pursuing a college degree. A student’s motivation to get involved in more extracurricular or co-curricular activities usually lead to a more positive and fulfilling college experience. Despite a students’ enrollment status or class, when, and how, they become involved in extracurricular activities and co-curricular activities will have a lasting impact on their holistic student development.
