ABSTRACT
This chapter demonstrates how geographical information systems (GIS) has been implemented in respect of examining the historical development of farms, farming and the agricultural landscape of part of south-east England, focusing especially on a swathe of parishes stretching across the South Downs in East and West Sussex. Use of GIS for contemporary or historical research or other purposes is not something to be undertaken lightly and some perseverance is necessary to derive the value-added benefits. The records from the and earlier censuses have been scanned and transcribed by organizations seeking to satisfy the growing demand for historical records as members of the public undertake genealogical research. The Landmark Information Group scanned all the historical ordnance survey topographic maps during the 1990s and these were subsequently incorporated into the Digimap collection at Edina. The map shows the farm's boundaries superimposed over the ordnance survey topographic map.
