ABSTRACT
This part introduction presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters. The part outlines a vision of how geographical technologies can be used across the humanities to explore space and time. It explains the urban history of Rio de Janeiro, particularly looking at renters and rentiers based on the broadly traditional types of sources but use them to explore individual lives, relationships and social networks. The part also presents historical study that also explores how individual lives are affected by larger events. It focuses on the experiences of soldiers from a single English town in one largely forgotten battle in the First World War using a digital textual record that they convert into a range of GIS layers. The part explores how geographic information systems can contribute to land use planning in Alaska and explores how geographical technologies can be used to enrich and explore a large corpus of literature from the city of Edinburgh.
