ABSTRACT

I was diagnosed HIV-positive in April 1987; I was probably infected in 1981–1982 in San Francisco, and have lived and worked in cities on four continents while being cared for by a variety of medical systems and practitioners. I am, of course, astoundingly lucky to have lived for so long with the virus, but intermittent problems with specific illnesses, varying levels of immune response, and sometimes fairly toxic medications have made HIV/AIDS a central focus of my life for more than 30 years.
