ABSTRACT
This chapter draws various strands of ideas presented in previous chapters together to argue that the colonial discourse on idolatry, by instituting a hierarchy between ‘idea’ and ‘image’, ‘belief’ and ‘practice’, ‘signified’ and ‘signifier’, ‘ideology’ and ‘idolatry’ could administer a despotic state in India in the name of ‘reason’.
