ABSTRACT

Sarala Devi remembered birthday celebration and how the traditional clothes replaced by western suit. Until her mejo-mami returned from England and started celebrating the birthdays of her children observation of birthday anniversaries, were unknown to them. Hemaprabha, younger sister of Jagadish Chandra Bose brought a gift for Sarala on her birthday. Nothing really had changed in her home when Hemaprabha dug out Sarala date of birth. The presence of Jagadish Bose's sisters in our school brought about certain subtle changes in the character of the school, largely influenced by their Brahmo culture. Mejo-mami had been a driving force on many festive occasions to get the Jorasanko family together and in helping in their dressing up. Men in her family, probably influenced by the aristocratic Muslim culture, had opted for the north-west form of dress for their outdoor lives. Mejo-mami's deft hands were often pressed into service to tie the turbans effectively on the heads of her many younger brothers-in-law.
