ABSTRACT

The children of Jorasanko had very few outlets for entertainment. Other than the 11th Magh celebration they had no other festivities. And, once Sarala Devi back from Lahore after marriage, she discovered to my horror that even that outlet was dying. With Rabindranath creation Santiniketan flourishing, he sacrificed Jorasanko children to favour Santiniketan students. Other than the Maghotsav they had no other festive occasions. The celebration of 11th Magh has gradually shifted to many musical schools that have sprung up to teach Rabindra sangeet (music). The many Jorasanko festivals that were once intimate parts of Debendranath's family have since his death progressively been converted into institutional affairs connected with the name of his famous youngest son achievements. In the same way, time has eroded the glory of Debendranath and Jorasanko, and it has shifted to Santiniketan, Rabindranath's institution — his 'Taj Mahal'. The ruins of Jorasanko have came under the protection of Curzon's Act to preserve historic monuments.
