ABSTRACT

After marriage Sarala Devi's sister (Didi) left to set up her own home and her elder brother went away to England, Sarala was the only child left at home. That provided her with the scope to get closer to her mother. Sarala Devi's family often travelled to Santiniketan where her maternal grandfather had a house. It was at Santiniketan that the writing bug seized Sarala. The children's magazine Sakha turned out to be truly a friend. The comic songs of D. L. Roy reached her much later, but for a long time, they remained entertainment items only for singing sessions. The soaring popularity of D. L. Roy's music and his songs soon gained the reputation of the highest literary merit. After Sakha some of her writings were published in the magazine Balak. Sarala remembered moment she visited Bolpur. In examination Sarala wrote own comments protesting against the views of Macaulay condemning the character of the Bengalis. She was awarded highest mark.
