ABSTRACT

The incumbent Principal of the Sanskrit College, who had two Master's degrees, took personal interest in tutoring Sarala Devi, and with his help, I had access to Sanskrit books on a variety of subjects. Sarala had regular visitor, Ramachandra Rao, a high placed officer of the Mysore Civil Service. Among her other acquaintances was a Mr Iyenger, a former principal of the Sanskrit College, and a Mr Iyer, a former curator of the Oriental Library. Sarala's special friend at Mysore, however, was Mrs Bhaba, the wife of the Director of Public Instruction, and their daughter. They were Parsees. She recalled the instances of nostalgic sentiments. After some months stay in Mysore her intrest started flagging, and she grew restless, homesick, and nostalgic for the lively atmosphere of home. She went down with a bout of malaria. On a three months' leave, she went off to Satara with her mother. She resigned after another three months and returned home to Calcutta.
