ABSTRACT

When Sarala Devi return from the South she started writing for Bharati and converted it into a combative organ. She urged Bengalis to cultivate and develop an intrepid character, unafraid to face death. She started my campaign by an announcement in the pages of journal Bharati: inviting reports of humiliation suffered at the hands of white civilians or military personnel— be it in railways, on steamers or anywhere— personally or by members of their families, where the victims immediately retaliated instead of taking recourse to the courts of law to seek redress. Manilal Ganguly was one of the young men who often came to see her. He was a nephew of Satish Mukherjee, then the editor of the journal Dawn. She was totally focused those days on Bengal which lies in the eastern frontier of our country. Her concern was to make Bengal prominent enough so that it could stand with its head held high with the other areas of the country.
