ABSTRACT

The artificial barrier stood very firm when Sarala Devi used to edit Bharati. She tried to breach this barrier by coaxing illustrious persons from other parts of India. She found one in Gandhi who had made quite a stir in South Africa, and in her eyes was a 'lion'. The complex issue of Hindu-Muslim unity was already much in her thoughts. She was once asked by Srish Sen to give a talk at a meeting of the Sadharan Brahmo Samaj, which she accepted provided Sarala could speak on the question of Hindu Muslim unity. The essence of my talk was that the conflict between communities in India was nothing new. It was part of India's history from time immemorial—since the days of conflicts between Aryans and non-Aryans. The original inhabitants resented the incoming hordes of migrants, and over time, these migrants assimilated with the original people and became one with them.
