ABSTRACT

Sarala Devi When she was at her Simla house it was decided by her father would travel to England. Shortly before he left she and her family moved to Jorasanko to live there. Sarala Devi recalled from her memories regarding structure of Jorasanko house. Jorasanko was a place of great magnificence; teeming with people, busy with endless activities. The sons and daughters of her maternal grandfather had their own separate quarters where they lived with their respective families. There were countless domestics, both male and female, to take care of the residents. A dozen Brahmin cooks were kept busy since early morning in the central kitchen cooking for the entire family and other residents. The food items that the cooks delivered at each quarter were common for all the residents, but in addition, the wives would prepare some special dishes, in their own corners, according to their own ideas or to suit the taste of their husbands.
