ABSTRACT

This chapter is an intersectional analysis of Black working-class students’ experiences of higher education at a South African university. The chapter uses an intersectional lens to explore aspects of race, socioeconomic class, gender and language in student narratives. The intersectional analysis of student narratives in the global South context suggests that historical injustices are reflected in the experiences of students who struggle to afford higher education, while also being more likely to face social exclusion and discrimination while at university. The aim of the chapter is to contribute an intersectional understanding of individual students as they construct and negotiate multiple narratives about themselves as university students and future citizens.
