ABSTRACT

Migration has become a major political issue—notably in Europe, the United States, and Australia—as conservative anti-immigrant sentiment has greatly increased and xenophobic politicians find greater success. This chapter examines the major issues involving refugees and displaced persons, illegal and legal migration, and the implications for policy and political development in both the developed and developing worlds. It suggests several analytical lenses for analyzing these sensitive issues. It also examines the similarities and differences in the use of migration issues in the pro-Brexit campaign in the United Kingdom and the Donald Trump campaign in the United States.
