ABSTRACT

Today the global political commons seems to be unraveling. Many leaders are vowing to protect their citizens from the economic power of rivals, from immigrants, from the threatening foreign world and the Other. Many observers are comparing current times to the 1930s when the world saw the last major outbreak of trade protectionism and xenophobia. The economic populism and racism of the early 20th century contributed to escalating nationalism and to mass movements that ultimately underpinned national-socialism and fascism.
