ABSTRACT

Our landscape is a significant health resource that promotes physical, mental and social wellbeing. Salutogenic landscapes afford behaviours that reduce stress, restore mental fatigue and enhance mood, self-esteem and wellbeing. They also foster physical wellbeing via opportunities to be active, and social wellbeing improves due to increased levels of social engagement, integration, participation and social support. This chapter explores how the landscape can offer opportunities for health and wellbeing benefits, and within the current context of escalating public mental ill-health, it analyses the role of nature-based interventions in wellbeing promotion. The evidence will help advance our understanding of the notion of restorative landscapes.
