ABSTRACT

This chapter explores the management of type 1 diabetes (T1DM) around exercise. It provides an insight into real-life clinical case studies that detail prudent adjustments made by patients as they strive to engage in physical activity for different outcomes, like weight management, hypoglycaemia avoidance and/or performance. People with T1DM should strive to achieve as ‘normal’ a blood glucose concentration similar to that of healthy individuals in daily living. Basal and bolus insulin should be injected into the subcutaneous tissue of the abdomen, lateral region of the thigh or anterior buttocks. Exercise elevates metabolic rate and increases the rate of glucose entry into skeletal muscle independent of, but in addition to, insulin-mediated glucose uptake. People with T1DM can expect to obtain the health benefits and improvements in functional capacity that people without the condition stand to gain from regular physical activity.
