ABSTRACT

This chapter defines dyslipidaemia and recommended lipid concentrations. It explains the benefits and impact of physical activity and exercise. Dyslipidaemia refers to an elevation of both triglycerides and total cholesterol within the blood stream, along with low concentrations of the protective high-density lipoproteins. Dyslipidaemia is usually symptom free until it progresses to serious conditions such as coronary artery disease and peripheral artery disease. Adaptations to exercise sessions may be needed to manage some of the possible side effects of lipid-lowering medications. Chronic high circulating blood glucose concentrations can damage the lining of blood vessels, increasing the likelihood of atherosclerosis. Exercise-associated acute cardiac events generally occur in individuals with structural cardiac disease that has progressed over many years. Health and fitness testing allows the practitioner to collect important information about the client to establish an appropriate starting point for exercise prescription.
