ABSTRACT

This chapter identifies the individual differences that may influence adherence to exercise and how different personality types may require different exercise referral processes. It analyses the barriers to and facilitators of individuals’ exercise referrals and how we can overcome these. he chapter explores how the patient’s perceptions of the exercise referral process can influence their goal setting. It analyses the role of the exercise specialist in supporting and guiding patients through the referral process to ensure adherence. Physical inactivity levels are rising within the UK, although many treatment guidelines are not specific. Individual differences in anxiety and their link to variations in selective attention to threat may be of significance to the treatment and management of chronic pain. Many pain management programmes are designed to educate patients about their pain and to help them set goals which will improve the areas of their lives on which pain has a significant negative impact.
