ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on the few academic articles and texts that address the topic of applied sport psychology service delivery with religious and spiritual athletes. It reviews the literature on applied sport psychology in relation to working with religious and spiritual athletes, and highlights the issues that have been raised by experienced applied practitioners. Sport psychology has finally begun to look more deeply at the role that religious belief and spirituality can play in the lives of athletes and others in sport. The chapter discusses own applied experiences working with athletes who hold religious and/or spiritual worldviews. It is argued that, especially as professional sport has become a truly transnational industry, sport psychology consultants should be prepared to acknowledge that many athletes consider their religion to be the most important source of personal meaning. The chapter also focuses on the work with elite and professional athletes across different sports.
